The Whampoa is an old shopping mall, built to resemble an 18th century sailing ship, located in the Z-Zone of Kowloon Walled City, in Hong Kong. The Whampoa is a techno-haven, where a tribe of local technomancers has managed to exchange hacking services with local gangsters in exchange for protection from corps, cops, and techno-haters. They follow a person or entity who they call The Captain.
