Owns “Aardvarc” out of the Boston Nub Hospital. Stands for Aemon’s Amazing Really Dope Vat Affirming Radical Charity. Is for him, then for children, then for normal shlubs in order of priority.
Where does your character come from, what is his lineage, who were his parents, and what did he inherit from them?
Aemon Burst is a Sinti of Central Europe, specifically Germany. His clan group is one of a handful of Sinti people who still make their livelihood out of trading and travelling. Various government lists and NGOs put the population of travelling Sinti in Europe at around 6,000 in total in the 2070 census.
Aemon is part of the elven Raén Cirollozidan Sinti group. The name translated means “The Elves who Travel and Leave Behind.” This group started in another group that was the conglomeration of Sinti and non-Sinti Elves that began in the 2030s. By the 2050s the original group split into three due to infighting and population expansion and the Raén Cirollozidan was the group that most adhered to traditional Sinti cultural practices. Now, in the 2070s, it’s the only Elven Sinti cultural group that hasn’t emigrated to an Elven nation.
Aemon Burst was born Aemon Jekh, or Aemon the First, but changed his name in an appropriate ritual when he was 15 in celebration of his recently discovered love of machine pistols.
His parents, Elderia and Sinfoy, had Aemon in 2057 on August 9th – the day that Dunkelzahn was assassinated. At least, this is the story his parents told. Truthfully, Aemon has seen vidcasts his parents sent out dated the 5th of that month with images of him as a newborn, so Aemon knows better. But he carries the anniversary of the Great Dragon’s death as his birthday in honor of his parents.
His mother was a trader of traditional means, non-awakened, and his father was a shaman and enchanter. Out of this relationship grew a natural need for a meta-critter hunter, and their son Aemon took to his role easily at age 13, when they gave him his first gun and told him to start practicing with it. By 15, his awakened body and puberty were giving him an accuracy and ability to shoot that no one in the group, indeed very few people that they met, seemed to have come across.
Aemon got from his parents most of his world-view, most of his identity. He is Sinti through and through, and largely identifies with a travelling, mildly xenophobic lifestyle. He particularly dislikes vampires, the HMHVV virus, and all things associated with the infected.
Assuming they could speak, what would each of your character’s parents say about her?
Elderia – “Eat your vegetables! Just because you’re 17 doesn’t mean you can go along and wither and die you goddamned teenager.”
Sinfoy – “Two cockatrice bladders!? Why do you do things that are so dangerous! I only needed cockatrice piss, Aemon!”
Pick a few events from recent Shadowrun history and ask where the character was at the time, what does he remember about the event, and what was he doing at the time?
Sapient Non-Metahuman Rights Accord – 2072 – age 15
The protests against the UN Security Council overturning the Sapient Non-Metahuman Rights Accord in 2072 was the first time Aemon participated in a political cause. The Raén Cirollozidan generally didn’t support the resolution for fear that it would give vampires and HMHVV victims more rights, something that the Sinti and Roma people in general have a strong heritage-based bias against. But Aemon – though truthfully uncomfortable with HMHVV – was pro the accord and spent two days lighting fires and rioting on the outskirts of East Berlin with some old hardline anarchists.
How did your character get into shadowrunning, and why did he take that path?
Aemon is an only child. His parents were killed in a Humanis Policlub raid when the three of them were on a culturally significant ritual in the forests of Eastern Germany. The ritual involved taking drugs and following a spirit of man on a three day quest to find leylines deep in the Reinhardswald. Unfortunately, the spirit led the trio to a secret bunker of Humanis, where Aemon’s parents were slaughtered while protecting their son; allowing his escape. The spirit had been summoned for them by a trusted local troll shaman named Acostado Comer Bosque who knew the area. He had disappeared by the time Aemon made it back to the troll’s home. After the mourning and funeral processes, Aemon got in touch with an expert on backwoods Humanis and supremacist groups, a gnome named Castiron who was living in Hamburg. Aemon sold the Humanis info to Castiron in exchange for a promise to hunt down the troll. After the gnome dealt with Humanis bunker in the Reinhardswald, the two of them went looking for the troll. After a week long search on the ground and another two months spent pouring over details, Aemon and Castiron were unable to find Acostado Comer Bosque.
Ever since then, Castiron and Aemon have been friends, and the gnome has hired Aemon on occasional, heavy runs to wield his trusty submachine guns.
What is your character’s living space like, and what has he added or changed to make it his own?
Aemon is a Sinti, an elf, an adept, and a badass. What use has he of a single place to sleep? He sleeps in the world. Investment is another word for cowardice – it shows you are unwilling to take the risks to get the job done, the woman loved, the purse stolen, the road travelled.
Investment means you will hold back. Aemon doesn’t hold back.
What does your character believe in, what are her convictions (if any), and why does he hold them?
Nobody lives forever.
Money is like water – you can dam it up in some fucking bank account, watch it swell and swell, take out a cup-full at a time to wash yourself with and drink. Or you can let the river run, bath in its strong current, and fill your belly.
Trust is earned.
What do you dislike most about your character’s personality?
Aemon is smug, not exactly nice, and an asshole occasionally. He believes that the Sinti are the greatest people on Earth and that staying put, in a house or apartment, is a sign of weakness. He’ll do it for a little while, but considers it a waste of time to not be discovering new things.
What is the story with your character and her contacts?
Castiron – friend, confidante
Loranius Marrow – A German fixer who’s sometimes willing to make a long drive to drop off equipment.
Fenius Gussuldio – a Hamburg street doc that Aemon uses to get medical supplies from. Also a hell of a dancer.
Beoprine Beoprine – a European smuggler.
Wally the Knife – a Hamburg talismonger of ill repute. Aemon’s parents had a good relationship with Wally, which Aemon inherited upon their death. Wally buys all kinds of shit that nobody else might think is valuable.
It’s Sunday morning, and your character has no commitments until tomorrow afternoon. What does he do for the day?
Aemon wakes up at 11, eats breakfast, goes to find something to shoot at for a while, calls some of his buds and bullshits for a while, watches some porn, goes to a bar and maybe tries to get lucky, maybe tries to steal someone’s drink when they’re not looking, gets drunk, leaves to go to the place he’s staying, shoots at some shit on the way back, and then hits the hay.
Is there a moral limit that your character enforces on the jobs he takes, and in what shadow work would he refuse to engage?
Aemon typically doesn’t like to hurt people who don’t need to be hurt. His ability to shoot at things with extreme precision means he can often defuse a situation by making a quick show of force and then let his adversaries decide if maybe there’s a better course of action. He doesn’t kill kids, doesn’t like to kill innocent people. He cares about collateral damage in that way.
Aemon’s not going to be doing any work based off disputed land or resource rights unless it’s against a corporation or government. He won’t do petty revenge work that involves murdering someone. He doesn’t do assassinations unless he’s personally invested in the outcome.
But he will work for a corp – he generally feels like the more of their money gets shat out into the streets the better. He loves spending corp money.
What drew your character to his particular magical paradigm, how does it effect the way he views the world and his magic?
Aemon is an adept in the most classic sense. He generally does one thing extremely well – shoot automatic weapons, specifically submachine guns. As to his rituals, etc., he’s a Sinti through and through. Shamanism is strong in his blood and he believes that sacrificing animals and power objects help him focus and stay attuned to his power.
How did your character come to have the enhancements he has, how were they paid for, and what motivated the choices he made (if he did make the choices)?
Aemon has some goggles, a rating 1 comm that he uses to call friends and watch porn, and that’s about it. He barely owns things. The comm he has currently is the third this year, and it’s only Feburary. A while back he bought a real real nice comm but it got some viruses on it or something and he sold it. Aemon don’t got shit – he can’t hold on to money long enough and he refuses to keep things internal and lose essence. Survival gear, climbing gear, a grappling hook, a few changes of clothes – these are the things he has.
Those and his two tricked out Praetor Submachine guns, which he bought by killing their former asshole owner.
What does your character think of ordinary life, mainstream culture, and those who abide by it?
Aemon thinks normal folks are fucking rubes who buy into everything and don’t think for themselves. In fact, he believes that they just need to be… freed… from their possessions to see how little things help people get by.
He does believe in the principals of ownership but thinks that you can only own that which you regularly use. If you have a second car you never drive, or a TV you barely watch, or a bunch of money in the bank that you never use, that’s not ownership. You’re paying someone to keep it for you for a time when you will own it.
But it ain’t yours if you ain’t using it.
If your character had a lingering nightmare or a deep-rooted fear, what would it be, and why does he find it so terrifying?
Aemon dreams of the spirit of man that led them through a drug hazed forest to a death squad in the Reinhardswald. He’s so afraid of the thing that he’s taken time out of his life to learn banishing, specializing in spirit of men banishing.
What is your character’s “sacred object” or “close one,” and how did they come to be so important to him?
Aemon only has a few things that he is unwilling to part with – his parents’ jewelry. The Sinti, like the Romani peoples, keep what little wealth they have in gold, silver, and precious gem jewelry – usually on their persons. While Aemon couldn’t take anything from his parents as they fought the Humanis members, he did collect a few of the pieces they’d left at the camp. He also had his father’s large gold loop earrings and his mother’s many eyebrow and lip rings recreated by a master jeweler. In total he’s got about 1,500 Nuyen worth of metal and gems on his face, arms, and fingers. Which is usually about 15 times the amount of money he has on his cred sticks.
What did your character want to become when he was a child, and what are his goals now?
Aemon wanted to be the world’s greatest para-critter hunter. From age 10 he was groomed to be just such a thing, and when he was 16 and in the prime of his youth, he was already tagging along with tourists and hunters into reserves around Europe and occasionally the world as the insurance policy in case things went wrong. He wanted to kill every exotic non-sapient beast, strip it, eat it, sell the parts, and repeat.
Now he’s looking to die young, leave a good looking corpse, and be remembered as a legend.
What does your character look like, and what inspired his choices?
Aemon is an elf. He has fairly supine features, large pointy ears. His hair is a tuft of black nonsense never styled. His lobes hang low with gold earrings. His face is a bit scarred and pitted, but generally as a 17 year old he looks young as fuck. He has three small gold rings in each of his bushy eyebrows, a silver bull ring through his septum, and his thin lips have gold rings through each bottom corner.
He wears his armor jacket at all times. He’s proud of the bullet bruises and large-cat-like claw marks in it, so it generally looks like shit. He doesn’t wear a shirt underneath whenever possible. He has a big old clunky belt with his two gun holsters on it and extra clips.
Each time he kills a new kind of animal he gets a tattoo of it on his body somewhere, so he’s got about 15 tattoos on his arms, legs, chest, and back. He has large golden bracelets on each arm, and a few gaudy rings on each hand.
His pants are generally pretty shitty looking and he has big old combat boots on.
How did your character come to be known by his street name?
Aemon didn’t have a street name, until recently!
Aemon was essence drained as part of a Swamp Thangs sacrifice ritual after being embarassingly overcome by their pet cockatrices while trying to sneak onto their base. He went a bit off the deepend, and helped some Black Star militants, angry at the loss of some of their compatriots to the Omega Dawn, slaughter some metaracist civilians living in Human Brigade turf on the edge of the CZ. He has since been trying to talk to people about it, but having trouble admitting what he’s done.
